The Maharashtra government has finally issued a resolution (GR) regarding giving of 20% of salary grant to 1,628 unaided schools and 2,452 division schools, as was decided in a cabinet meeting held in the last week of August. Some educational organisations, however, have claimed that the criteria to be eligible for these grants are too strict.

To be eligible for the grant, a school should have Aadhar Card numbers of all their students, 100% result in Class IX and X, and must upload the Aadhar Card details and approval of its teachers on the SARAL website. In addition, a biometric attendance record of students, teachers and other staffers is also a must, among several other such requirements.

Maharashtra School Principals Association spokesperson Prashant Redij said, "A very important detail is that the government has not mentioned when the grant will be started. Looking at the strict criteria, it seems the government has no intention to give the grant. How can every school afford to put up biometric machines for attendance? On top of that, the GR states that if a school fails to maintain 100% result in Class IX and X for three consecutive years, the school will lose recognition. We are not happy with the GR."

Echoing Redij's sentiment, MLC Kapil Patil, president of Lok Bharati, said, "Half of the schools will not be able to fullfill the criteria that the GR has mentioned. Many teachers will retire without salaries. I feel this is a discrimination as the schools that get 100% salary grant are not being asked to fullfill these criteria. It will be a financial burden on schools to fit biometric machines for attendance. We are very upset."
