A 57-year-old builder shot himself at his Chembur office on Thursday morning. The deceased has been identified as Sanjay Agarwal. He was one of the founding partners of Sanjona Builders and as per police reports, he committed suicide as his business was not doing well.

Sources close to the family said Agarwal was the face of Sanjona Builders and was instrumental in carrying out all of the company's projects successfully. According to one of Agarwal's office staff, on Thursday morning, as per his daily routine, Agarwal drove from his Khar residence to Chembur office with his son, Kshitij. The father-son duo reached the office at Sindhi Colony in Chembur at 11 am and got busy preparing for a meeting.

"Kshitij was sitting outside his father's cabin working on the meeting, while two office staffers were busy preparing refreshments for the meeting. After some time, they heard a gunshot from Sanjay's cabin. They rushed to the cabin, to find him lying on the floor with a gunshot wound in his head. While Kshitij alerted his mother Asha who was at her residence, the staffers called the police," said a staff of Agarwal's office.

According to cops, Agarwal was then rushed to Rajawadi Hospital and the police team sent his licensed revolver for forensic tests. The police did not recover a suicide note from the cabin, but his family said he was under immense pressure due to the stalled construction of his Chembur project for 10 years.

"The family suspects pressure of unfinished project and business obstacles was the trigger behind Sanjay's suicide. We have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the matter and a probe has been initiated. We are investigating the matter and the body has been sent to state-run JJ Hospital for further probe," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 6, Shahaji Umap.

Sunil Gupta, Agarwal's brother-in-law and partner in Sanjona Builders, who had worked with him for over 25 years, said, "Sanjay was a very jovial person. We had a few problems in the business, but there are ups and downs in all firms. We don't know what transpired in him to take such an extreme step. He never let us know that he was so upset."

Gupta was on his way to the meeting when Sanjay shot himself. He added, "When I saw him last on Wednesday evening, he was all fine and discussed the points to be explored in the meeting."
