Politicians and their penchant for beacons on top of their vehicles continue despite the Union government wanting to end VIP culture. In the latest case, Mumbai's Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar of Shiv Sena has allegedly been found flouting the ban on red beacons on cars of dignitaries and officials. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) of Tardeo has now sent a notice to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) asking them to remove the red beacon from his vehicle.

The officials from Tardeo RTO said that both old and new cars belonging to the Mayor have a beacon atop them in violation of rules.

"This notice was sent to the BMC on October 13 after the administration installed red beacon on Mayor's Innova Crysta (MH-01-CT-1935) car that the civic body brought after paying Rs 19 lakh and was registered with us on October 4," said an official from Tardeo RTO.

The limit to be spent for Mayor is Rs 15 lakh set by the state government. Sources said that Mahadeshwar was also using a red beacon on his old car XUV 500 (MH-01-AN-5424).

When contacted, Mahadeshwar said that he has not received any notice from the RTO and he does not use a red beacon. He said that the beacon is covered. Mahadeshwar's predecessor as Mayor, Snehal Ambekar had also refused to do away with the red beacon.
