The Medical Council of India (MCI) has taken a serious note of doctors who are obtaining degrees through long-distance courses from abroad. Such degrees, which are shown as master degrees, are not recognised by the council. Hence, MCI has issued a notice to its state council stating that doctors should not be allowed to add such degrees to their names as this misleads patients.

According to MCI, doctors have been putting up misleading boards which mention such degrees to attract patients to their clinics. Some doctors, after taking their basic MBBS degree from state medical colleges do not get admission in MCI recognised colleges for further studies. So, they opt for long-distance courses paying hefty fees and get degrees such as MS and MD. And later, they add these degrees to their names.

However, even before getting the notice from MCI, the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) had already issued directives to the doctors who have been using such misleading degrees.

At least 30 people had complained to the MMC about this and some of the complainants were doctors. Acting on these complaints, the MMC had sent notices to 600 doctors across Maharashtra.

Dr Kishor Taori, president of MMC, has confirmed that they have received a notice from MCI. "We have already sent such directives to doctors across the state. The matter came to light after we found two doctors possessing such degrees. They obtained the degress through long-distance courses, primarily from abroad. Their degrees portrayed them as master degree holders in their respective fileds andthese degrees are not recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI)," he informed.

Dr Jayesh Lele, President elect, Indian Medical Association, (Maharashtra Branch), said: "This is a welcome move. The doctors should be responsible. They should not portray themselves as master of a particular subject by obtaining such degrees. Because, they cannot get any knowledge or experience through such degrees."
