Thanks to consistent rainfall in the catchment region, water stock available across Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) dams is at a four-year high.

As on August 8, seven reservoirs supplying water to city had recorded 11,97,567 million litres of stock. On the same day in 2013, 2012 and 2011, the stock available across the dams was 11,92,134 million litres; 7,075,24 million litres, and 8,88,723 million litres, respectively.

This is for the first time this season that the stock has surpassed useful content available last monsoon, with the reservoirs receiving an average shower of 1,826mm.

According to civic officials, the stock available now is enough to last 319 days. On a normal day, BMC supplies 3,750 million litres of water to city.

"We are happy to see that the overall rainfall received, over the past two weeks especially, has triggered the rise. At one point of time, we were considering inflicting additional water cuts, but the satisfactory showers have allayed the fear. We only hope the catchment region registers adequate rainfall over the next seven weeks of monsoon. We need to have 12.50 lakh million litres as on October 1," a senior civic official said.

As reported in dna earlier, BMC had implemented 20% cut in the duration for which residents receive supply. The cut extent was brought down to 10% on July 30 after adequate rainfall in the region. In addition to this, BMC has been executing 50% to 100% water cut in supply made to commercial establishments and recreational facilities.

As on August 8, 2014...
Total water dams can store annually: Around 14,47,000 million litres
