The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's plan to set up central kitchens to provide midday meals to nearly 4 lakh students has got a push after the Bombay High Court recently lifted a stay on the move. The corporation is scouting for locations to set up the mass-cooking centres.

The civic body has been supplying food to its 1,196 schools through self-help groups – there are nearly 450 of them in the city. Following complaints about poor quality of food served to students, the BMC had come up with the concept of centralized kitchens for efficient operations.

However, the move was challenged by some groups in the HC, which then imposed a curb on the work. But the incident of nearly 450 children falling sick after having lunch at an Andheri school last year prompted the civic body to follow up with the court to get the stay lifted.

The BMC has started identifying locations to set up kitchens, one each for the island city, the eastern and the western suburbs. The idea behind three kitchens is to curtail time in transporting food to the schools. Once the locations are finalised, tender process for the same will be initiated, said Vinod Shelar, chairman of BMC's education committee.

"The decision is being taken to ensure that we provide hygienic food. Presently, the food is cooked in smaller kitchens. To maintain quality, we are considering a change in the style of working. Khichdi apart, we also plan to include other options," said Shelar.
