The Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court on Friday that it will provide 24x7 police security in 16 hospitals outside Mumbai. The police personnel deployed at the hospitals will be armed with weapons.

The state government had earlier informed the court that it will deploy 28 police personnel for security of resident doctors at six hospitals in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, advocate Datta Mane, Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) lawyer, pointed out to the court that a committee headed by retired judge V C Daga was appointed by the state in April 2016 for effective redressal of resident doctors' grievances. The committee, however, held only one active meeting since its inception.

To this, the High Court ordered government pleader advocate Milind More to take instructions from committee chairman Daga about when he will be holding the next meeting, or else it would replace Daga and appoint another judge on the committee.

MARD had held a strike earlier this year to protest against physical assault on resident doctors by relatives of patients. The strike was challenged by petitioner Afaq Mandaviya in the form of a public interest litigation (PIL).

The next hearing of the case will be on August 12. A bench of justices Abhay Oka and A Syed is hearing the case.
