State-wide survey reveals 16% rural, 2% urban homes don't have toilet: Maha government

A survey conducted on around 1.11 lakh rural and urban households by the state government revealed that around 16 per cent of rural and two per cent urban households do not have a toilet.

The survey was conducted by the state's Directorate of Economics, Statistics and Planning Department between July 2017 and December 2017, to understand the status of availability of foodgrain, ration card, toilet, and source of drinking water in the state.

The survey also revealed that: "About two per cent rural and 10 per cent urban households reported using public or community toilets."

The survey further revealed that about 72 per cent rural households and 74 per cent urban households have exclusive toilets, while 10 per cent rural and 15 per cent urban households have common toilets within the household premises — which is shared by two-three households.

The survey also studied the source of drinking water and it was revealed that 92 per cent rural and 95 per cent urban households reported sufficient availability throughout the year.

However, with regard to the source of the drinking water, about 61 per cent rural households and 80 per cent urban households had access to piped water within their household premises. About 18 per cent of rural and 13 per cent urban households had the same facility outside their household premises, followed by 20 per cent rural and six per cent urban households sourcing drinking water from a tubewell or a borewell.

Further when it comes to ration card and availability of food grains at fair price shops, about 91 per cent of rural households and 68 per cent of urban households posses ration card followed by 79 per cent of eligible rural households and 44 per cent of eligible urban households admitting to have on time availability of food grains at fair price shops.
