With its cloud seeding efforts failing miserably last year and this year as well, the state government is now exploring the possibility of taking help from Chinese experts and try cloud seeding again in the catchment areas of the Ujani dam.

A delegation of eight experts from the Shanghai province weather department, and interpreter Anoudhka Doshi, made a visit to Solapur on Thursday and surveyed the possible sites in Ujani dam catchment areas for the project.

After the primary survey, the Chinese delegation has shown keenness in going in for cloud seeding in the area. Accordingly, the state government is preparing the proposal. Chief secretary Swadheen Kshatriya told dna that since it would be an effort involving international experts, it would be a government to government endeavour.

Reportedly, the Shanghai experts are of the opinion that it is possible to go for cloud seeding in the catchment areas of Ujani dam, which has a vast capacity of holding water and could provide great help during the hour of crisis for Marathwada.

The Chinese delegation was provided with all the necessary information by executive engineer A P Sonewar and his colleagues, along with the revenue officials. Sonewar said the experts asked various questions, including average rainfall, reasons for drought and failing of previous efforts.

Meanwhile, an official from the disaster management authority said more than 50 planes are dedicated to meteorology applications-related work in China. They also have a staff of 56,000 for weather department, 262 doppler radars and dish antenna-equipped mobile vans. He said the Chinese use small missile-like systems for cloud seeding. These missiles are portable and can be launched from even a small vehicle.
