While traffic management on Mumbai's congested roads, intelligence gathering to neutralise terror threats and cracking down on corruption should be focus areas for the city and state police, seven key policing posts overseeing these domains are currently lying vacant, some for several months.

Last month, after then Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Paraskar was promoted to the rank of IG and transferred to the state police headquarters, the post has been lying vacant. The Additional CP Traffic spearheads major traffic campaigns in the city and has a direct hand in overseeing traffic management for the city.

Since December last year, the post of Additional Commissioner of Police (North Region) has also been lying vacant. Last year, the area witnessed some major cases that put the police in a tough spot. Over 100 people had died in a hooch tragedy in Malwani and four persons from Malwani had fled their homes to join Islamic State (IS). One of them Ayaz Sultan, however, managed to flee India and reach Afghanistan to join IS.

Even the coveted post of Director General of Police (Anti-Corruption Bureau) has been lying vacant since ACB chief Satish Mathur left the post in July this year, and took over as Maharashtra Director General of Police.

Several initiatives introduced in the ACB last year, such as shaming accused caught in bribe cases by posting their photographs on a Facebook Page of the ACB, issuing a dedicated WhatsApp number for victims to bring forward instances of corruption by government servants, and a mobile phone application, have now practically come to a standstill.

The post of Inspector General of Police (Anti-Terrorism Squad) has been lying vacant since Niket Kaushik was transferred as Commissioner of Police, Railways, in July, this year. "IG ATS has been a significant post as it entails not only direct supervision in important cases, but also acting as a nodal officer with other central agencies," said a senior officer who has earlier worked with the ATS.
