Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar slammed the BJP government on Tuesday for carrying out a political vendetta against NCP politicians, particularly senior leader Chhagan Bhujbal.

Pawar was addressing the media for the first time after his illness. He said he is alive and that people should not worry about his health much. "I am fit and fine," the veteran politician said.

Pawar said that in 1995 the Shiv Sena and the BJP had come to power in state due to the effort of late Sena chief Bal Thackeray and at that time the two parties didn't indulge in such tactics. "BJP leaders are deliberately targeting Mr Bhujbal and his family. Why has the Maharashtra Sadan case been investigated again and again? If there is truth to the allegations, it will come out. But the repeated deliberate inquiries have been carried out to malign our leaders," he added.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Bhujbal's nephew Sameer in a money-laundering case and is conducting an inquiry against him and Bhujbal.

"Mr Bhujbal has not done anything wrong. Whatever decisions were taken, they were collective ones of the state cabinet. Why only target one person?" he asked.

Pointing out that BJP MP Kirit Somaiya is the complainant and the government led by his party is making the inquiry, Pawar said, "The entire act looks suspicious. The ED and other government agencies are being used to settle political scores. The government is piling on political pressure to take action against NCP leaders. This is a wrong trend and will spoil the entire political atmosphere."

Senior BJP minister Eknath Khadse, however, refuted Pawar's claim. "The matter has been investigated transparently. It is not a political decision. If they feel injustice has been done to them, they can go to court for justice. Everything has been done as per the rule of the law."
