The committee appointed to investigate the racket that was busted in Dr LH Hiranandani hospital said it will investigate the case referred to it by the police. The committee is instead working on policies that will make the live-related kidney transplant more transparent by reducing human errors.

Dr Gauri Rathod, assistant director at Directorate of Health Services (DHS) who looks after the department of Human Organ Transplant Act, said, "We will be investigating the cases referfed to us by the police. Our main focus is to make the live-related kidney transplants robust with no chance of human error. We are working on several new policies that can be introduced."

She said that presently suggestions and discussions are on various ways to avoid forgery of documents in live-related kidney transplants.

"Suggestions like appointing police officers in the hospital's ethics committee, introducing iris scanner and linking adhaar card, having retired judicial persons in the committee etc. are being proposed. We will take a decision on the same soon," said Rathod.

A live-related kidney transplant was stopped by the police at Hiranandani hospital on July 14 after receiving information that the donor impersonated as wife of the recipient and forged documents were prepared for the same. The transplant team had started the surgery and taken an incision on the donor for the kidney retrieval.

The hospital's ethics committee comprises of hospital CEO or medical director, a social worker or retired government officer, a member from the health department, along with a legal expert. Once the committee is convinced, then only a transplant can take place.

Rathod said that the committee investigating the kidney racket will submit its report by Tuesday.

The Powai police has so far arrested seven people including the hospital's transplant coordinator Nilesh Kamble. Police said that Kamble was working with the hospital for the last five years and there were several other kidney transplants done on the basis of fake documents. The hospital's transplant license was suspended by the state on July 16.

The hospital too has appointed an internal committee and find discrepancies in documents submitted in another live-related kidney transplant. According to hospital sources, the police has been informed about it and investigation is on.
