The State Election Commission (SEC) on Thursday launched a Mobile Application aiming to reach out to voters and create awareness. The Mobile App named ‘COP - Citizens on Patrol’ has enabled the citizens to reach out to the SEC instantly to report any violation of the model code of conduct by any party candidate. To encourage more participants, SEC will maintain secrecy of name and their mobile number. The app was launched by Governor of Maharashtra, CH Vidyasagar Rao.
The app has the facility to locate the co-ordinates of the mobile device from where the picture or video is posted, which will enable immediate action to be taken. “As soon as any picture or video of violation of code of conduct is posted, the SEC will inform the nearest police station and the cops will take action," State Election Commissioner, J S Saharia explained. After the appropriate action is taken, a message will be sent to the person who reported it. We will keep the name and mobile number of the complainer secret as many people do not file complaints due to fear. We encourage alert citizens to report any violations they see,” he added.
Governor of Maharashtra, CH Vidyasagar Rao appreciated the SEC for its proactive initiative to reach out to voters and and create a people-friendly mechanism for fair elections.
The SEC recently undertook a few technology-driven initiatives like Operation Black Dot, Gupshup, Facebook Messenger etc to connect with the youths and encourage them to vote.
In order to keep the election process transparent, the State Election Commission this time has appointed Income Tax officers to track expenditure by the candidates. “Many a time, the candidates spend more during the campaign than what they claim on paper. Thus, the Income Tax officials will keep track on their expenditures,” Saharia said. The SEC has appointed 15 Income Tax officers for the BMC elections to be held next month.
