The State Election Commission (SEC) is taking significant steps to woo young voters through digital campaigns which have so far received a good response. To take this campaign ahead and create more awareness, four short films will be rolled out showcasing the present civic conditions in the city and the importance of voting. The production houses Phantom, AIB, Imped and Cordiform films who have worked and shot these films will be released with the help of Operation Black Dot, Mumbai's largest apolitical, voter registration/awareness campaign, by Friday.

The two-minute films which will be uploaded on Youtube, Operation Black Dot's Facebook page, will probably be shown in cinema halls as well. "The objective behind rolling out the short films is to request Mumbaikars to come out and cast their vote. "We have decided to release the films five to six days before polling day to have a better impact on the audience," said Swaraj Shetty, Chief Innovation officer of Operation Black Dot.

Through its MahaVoters campaign the SEC has already launched two mobile applications namely 'True Voters' and 'COP' (citizens on patrol). Under Operation Black Dot, the SEC has also created a Facebook page. The messenger has various features including voter tools, candidate information, election analysis and voters' guide among others.

The 'voter search' feature helps the user identify his/her ward and polling booth address while the 'candidate search' helps to know the respective candidates for the ward. "The basic objective is to reach the tech savvy youth and encourage them to vote. As Facebook usage is very common, thus reaching more and more voters is possible thorough this technology. The election commission is taking significant steps towards digital technology to reach out to a large number of citizens," said Swaraj Shetty. The voter turnout for civic elections has been poor over the past few years.
