Stars to spread plastic ban awareness in Mumbai

The stay on the ban of plastic bags in Maharashtra will end on June 23. Any person found using plastic bags after the stay ends will have to pay the fine imposed by the civic body.

In order to implement the plastic ban in the city effectively, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to involve players from the women’s national cricket team. Women cricketers are expected to participate in a three-day exhibition to be organised next week. The exhibition will look at finding an alternative to plastic bags, a senior official from BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department (SWM) said. 

The stay on the ban of plastic bags in Maharashtra will end on June 23. Any person found using plastic bags after the stay ends will have to pay the fine imposed by the civic body. The BMC has already deployed around 200 officials across 24 wards to ensure people adhere to the ban.

A senior official said that that the exhibition, from June 22 to 24 will be organised at the The National Sports Club of India (NSCI) in Worli. 

Apart from players from the women’s cricket team, Bollywood actor Ajay and Kajol Devgn and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with his wife Amruta Fadnavis, are also expected to be present during the inaugural ceremony of the exhibition. 

Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of SWM said, “Plastic ban can be implemented effectively if everyone comes forward.” He added that they are trying to bring whole families to the function.” Apart from Ajay and Kajol Devgn, Juhi Chawla and Dia Mirza are also expected to attend the function.

Since the ban on plastic has come into effect, the BMC has already collected around 1.4 lakh kg plastic by a door-to-door collection process, including the plastic dumped in garbage bins across the city.
