A proposal for new modular operation theatres in civic hospitals, which will reduce the chance of infection to patients, was cleared at a special BMC standing committee on Thursday.

As part of the new plan, nine modular operation theatres will be set up in different departments of Nair Hospital, KEM Hospital and Sion Hospital.

"Patients admitted to civic hospitals are prone to infection, as over 1.25 crore of them visit these hospitals every year. The new modular OT is the need of the hour, which is why the proposal has been included in the agenda of the special meet," says civic chief Ajoy Mehta.

Two modular OTs will be assigned to the eurology departments in the three hospitals. This apart, KEM Hospital will also have a modular OT each for its gynaecology, paediatric and dermatology departments.

The civic body will spend around Rs29 crore on the project. "The city hospitals are capable of handling 70 lakh patients annually, but we get about 1.25 crore patients. In order to prevent infection post-operation, the modular operation theatres will be installed in hospitals," said Mehta.

However, members questioned the delay introducing the proposal for approval.

While proposals worth over Rs 80 crore, pertaining mostly to preventive road repair works, to be carried out before monsoon were cleared at the special standing committee meeting, members claimed that the agenda for the meeting was circulated at 2 am on Thursday, and that they did not have enough time to go through them.

"The special meet has been called for the benefit of citizens. The model code of conduct may come into force anytime, and then there will be no chance to pass these proposals for at least two months," said Mehta.

The standing committee on Tuesday had put on hold preventive road works to be carried out before monsoon, as several members had termed the proposals premature. Dilip Patel, BJP member of the standing committee said,

"For the first time, proposals which were put on hold were introduced within two days." He added that a few proposals did not have details of the roads to be repaired before monsoon. According to the proposals cleared during the meet, preventive road works will be carried out in all six Mumbai zones, with an estimated budget of Rs 8-16 crore. The number of roads in each zone ranges from 20 to 60. According to BMC, roads with paver blocks develop potholes during monsoon, and all such roads across the city will be asphalted.
