In these times of hi-tech gadgets and social media addiction, the news that a number of SSC students have failed in the graded subject information and communication technology (ICT) might surprise many.

According to the Mumbai division board, 9,720 students have failed their SSC exam this year as a result of failing in ICT.

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) made ICT compulsory from the academic year 2013-14. The 50-mark subject is divided in 40 marks theory and 10 marks practical. The theory part is conducted by the state board and the practical at the school level.

Because the online result only shows theory marks and not graded subject grades, principals of city schools suspect that their students are showing as 'failed' due to ICT, because marks of other graded subjects physical training, work education, and social service are sent by schools to the board and no school would fail their students in such exams conducted at the school level.

Principal of Gokalibai High school, Vile Parle, Dharmishta Ghedia said, "It is surprising that students who have scored well in all subjects are getting 'fail' results."

Echoing Ghedia, principal of Versova Welfare Association High School, Andheri, Neelam Bhatia said, "One of our students who has scored first class in all subjects has gotten 'failed' result online. Our students are from the economically weaker section and that is why we will help our student to apply for revaluation. This is the first time that those who have scored good marks in their theory exams have failed, which is disappointing."

"ICT is a compulsory graded subject. Its marks are converted into grades. From Mumbai, our record shows that 9,720 students have failed in it. If a student fails in any graded subject, s/he would get a 'fail' result no matter how good his/her scores in theory papers. Also, at times, students are shown 'absent' by mistaken by the school, in which case too a 'failed' result is possible. We are helping all those students who are coming to us with these inquiries," said chairman of Mumbai division board Duttatray Jagtap.
