The accused, Narendra Gurav works with an Andheri-based company in SEEPZ. Both him and the victim are residents of Gnyaneshwar Nagar in Nalasopara (E).

According to the police, Gurav liked the girl, a class 10 student, and had proposed marriage twice. However, the girl rejected his advances. On Thursday afternoon, when the girl was at home with her 11-year-old mentally challenged brother, he entered her house and asked her to marry him, yet again. When she refused, he slashed her neck and wrists in a fit of rage, and fled when she raised an alarm.

The girl’s neighbours found her lying unconscious and bleeding and rushed her to a nearby hospital, and her parents, who were out working, were informed. She received 34 stitches on her wrists, but is stable and recuperating.

“We arrested Gurav from his friend’s house in Santosh bhuvan. He has confessed to the crime, saying he was furious with the girl for not agreeing to marry him which is why he took the extreme step of slashing her wrists in order to teach her a lesson,” said assistant inspector Devendra Chauhan of Nalasopara police station. The girl’s brother, who was at home when the incident took place, has been declared a mute witness.

The girl’s parents said that she would call Gurav “bhai” (brother), and were shocked that he was the one who hurt their daughter.

Chauhan added, “We have booked him under sections 326(voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means or weapons) and 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code. But after looking at the medical reports, we have appealed to the Vasai court to also book him under section 307 (attempt to murder). He has been remanded in police custody till June 7.”
