Charkop Sector 08 Vikas Samiti is known for the keen eye it keeps on the green mangroves that encompass the area. The group has been conducting various activities and drives to raise awareness about the depleting mangrove cover in Charkop, the importance of retaining this green cover, the encroachment threats that it faces and the need of the hour to save it.

This time, though, the Samiti has come up with an upbeat initiative that would create a riot of colours in Sector 8. This project is called 'Grow more trees - Harabhara Abhiyaan' under which the members planted 150 Bougainvillea plants. As part of the above Abhiyaan, to make the surrounding area colourful, these saplings were planted behind the 900 sq. m. wall on the southern side of the 90 Ft Road.

Mili Shetty, chief coordinator of the Samiti and the brain behind this unique initiative, shares, “I usually visit the Malad HyperCity and InOrbit Mall and there’s a BMC garden on the way there, which has several Bougainvillea flowers shooting from each corner, making the garden look colourful and appealing. So, I thought why not try this in Charkop as it would look brilliant with the backdrop of the green mangroves.”

These plants will shoot flowers in about four to five months and once that happens, the entire look and feel of the area will change, enhancing the overall aesthetic beauty. MP Gopal Shetty, Corporator Sandhya Vipul Doshi and senior police officers from the Charkop Police Station attended and participated in this drive with 50 other residents from the area.

These tropical plants are known for blooming all year around and are quite easy to maintain. They can survive in the harsh heat along with moderate water levels.
