A fraction of a second was all it took for a trip to Mumbai by a Gujarat-based family to end on a fatal note. The driver of their mini bus dozed off on the highway in the wee hours of Monday, crashed into a luxury bus, killed 11 people and injured 20 others. The driver of the mini bus is in a critical state.

A mini bus (GJ 07V YY 4509) was travelling towards Surat on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway around 4.30am on Monday when the driver, Idhris Surti dozed off for a brief moment.

The vehicle crossed the divider on to the Mumbai lane near Achhad village, where a luxury bus (GJ 21 T 99789) was moving from the opposite direction. Its driver could not hit the brakes on time, and collided with the mini bus.

A 10-member family in the mini bus was fast asleep when this happened. Locals rushed to help out and got the injured admitted in various hospitals in Vapi and Silvassa.

Out of the 57 passengers in the luxury bus, one died, while 20 sustained minor injuries. The driver, Akhtar Hussain (32) was also injured, but managed to alert the Talasari police about the collision.

An officer with Talsari police said: "The driver of the luxury bus managed to save his passengers because he took a sharp turn, else the impact could have been much more severe."

Inspector Ghanshyam Adhav, Talsari police said: "We have registered the case under IPC Sections 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence), 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), and under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act."

Adhav added that investigations are ongoing, and if Surti survives, he will be arrested. In the mini bus, all 10 passengers, including three kids, were residents of Surat.
