Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who also heads Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has instructed its officials to fast track the construction of the 5 km-long Bhayandar-Naigaon Sea Link, MMRDA officials said. During a meeting with MMRDA officials, Fadnavis asked them to float bids for the same by July 2018.

A MMRDA official said, "We have prepared the final report for the project however clearances from the forest department and salt pan commissioner are awaited."

The official added, "We expect to get all clearances by May 2018 and start construction work for by year-end. Once we start it will take around three years for the project to complete."

The 5 km-long sea link with 3+3 lanes on both sides will run parallel to the Western Railway bridge between Bhayandar and Naigaon and will eventually connect with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway 8.

Currently, people travelling to Naigaon, Vasai and Virar from Bhayandar take the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway-8 but after the new sea link is constructed, the travel distance will become shorter and the travelling experience for motorists will also improve as the National Highway is full of trucks and buses which makes driving difficult.

Proposed in 2013, at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore, the project has been on papers owing to environmental clearances. Due to these delays, the construction cost is now estimated to be Rs 1,500 crore. The project was also delayed due to protests from the locals at Panju island, the region over which the sea link will pass.
