84-year-old Lalita Subramanian was left surprised when she found a Matunga police team and Deputy Commissioner of Police N Ambika at her residence on Wednesday morning.

Subramanian was full of smiles when she saw that the cops were there with a cake and a gift to celebrate her 84th birthday. Subramanian, who stays alone in her flat, was touched by this gesture.

DCP Ambika, Matunga police station Senior Police Inspector Bharat Bhoite, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Asmita Bhosale, along with 15-20 policemen reached at Subramanian's residence with a cake, bouquet and a saree to celebrate her 84th birthday.

Subramanian has three children — a son and a daughter settled in the US and another son in Bengaluru. Although, Subramanian has been living alone since 20 years at her Wadala residence, she has never felt alone. Her children visit her once a year, but they trust that she's safe and cared for with her friends in the police force.

Subramanian has a 20-year-old bond with Matunga police when she had approached them regarding a case. Since then, they have been in regular contact with each other. The cops also run errands for her.

"Everyone at the police station addresses her as 'mummy' (mother). She is like a family member for the police station staff. At times, when she is unable to speak because of Asthma, all she has to do is call up on our mobile phones or just ring the pooja bell in her house while the call is on. We sense that she needs us and rush to her house for help. Our female staff is also aware of the medicines Subramanian needs and ensure she takes them on time," said an officer from Matunga police station.

"She interacts with me often. Whenever she has any problem, she immediately calls me or any other cop from the Matunga police because of the bond that she shares with us. She is very special to us and was very happy to see us. We want more senior citizens to approach us and interact with us," said DCP Ambika.

"I never felt lonely as I have my police friends and children taking care of me whenever I need them," said Subramnian.
