Sparrow Awards 2015: Three conservationists awarded for their work

On the occasion of World Sparrow Day, Nature Forever Society in association with Wipro, conferred Society Sparrow Awards on three conservationists, on Friday. The award comprises Rs50,000 worth of equipment and a citation. Maharashtra Nature Park, the venue for the award ceremony, came alive with conservationists, nature enthusiasts, ornithologists and Mumbaikars from all walks of life.

On the occasion of World Sparrow Day, Nature Forever Society in association with Wipro, conferred Society Sparrow Awards on three conservationists, on Friday. The award comprises Rs50,000 worth of equipment and a citation. Maharashtra Nature Park, the venue for the award ceremony, came alive with conservationists, nature enthusiasts, ornithologists and Mumbaikars from all walks of life.

The three winners of Sparrow Awards 2015 were Arif Siddiqui, eco-tourism promoter and Lepidopterist (a specialist in the study of moths) for his work in Arunachal Pradesh in discouraging deforestation; Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Forest Cell volunteers for their dedication to the cause of conservation despite low financial aid and Rushikulya Sea Turtle Protection Committee for coming together across generations to save the Olive Ridley Turtle.

Mohammed Dilawar, founder and president, Nature Forever Society and initiator of World Sparrow Day, said that the winners were chosen after careful deliberation.

He added: "We have been following their work closely over the past few years and have measured the impact of their conservation and sustainability initiatives. From its inception, this award has grown in stature and the winners have been contributing tremendously with their time and effort, and more often than not, they are self-funding these initiatives."

NFS also announced 'Help the Birds in Summer', a national campaign in association with Dainik Bhaskar. Also announced at the event was the Caring Friends-NFS Conservation Research Fellowship. This Fellowship is available for research in the area of nature conservation.

Also present at the event was Priti Kataria, vice president and global HR head – GIS and chairperson PHSC, Suresh Thorat, principal chief conservator of forests (Wildlife), western region (Maharashtra), Vinay Maheshwari, senior vice president, sales and marketing development and brand marketing, Dainik Bhaskar Group and Sujit Patil, VP, corporate communications, Godrej Consumer Pvt Ltd.
