While most cities use the empty space underneath their flyovers for plantation or as parking lots, the vacant space under Thane's flyovers has become an activity area for sports and education.

After hosting signal school, a 100 metre skating competition was organised under one of the flyovers in the city recently.

On the morning of January 18, a skating competition was held underneath the Nitin company flyover at Thane west. Over 170 participants from five to 17 years old, participated in this competition organised by ESPM sports club in association with Raysa Skating club.

"The space under the flyover is beautified and is used by many to practice sports. And we needed a long uninterrupted stretch for skating which is difficult to find in the city," says Eknath Pavale, president of ESPM club.

"The area under the Nitin flyover has a 1.5 km expanse which is ideal for skating," added Pavale. He allays the safety concern due to vehicular movement on both sides of the road.

"There is a garden on both sides of this stretch under the flyover. So no question of accidents due to vehicles arise," he says.

The skaters have been practicing in this area for over a month and the space will also be used to hold future sports competition and practices. "We plan to start Malkhamb, sword fighting and dandpatta classes here. And also organise similar competitions," he added.

Even the Teen Hath Naka flyover at Thane hosts signal schools for underprivileged children in the city. Last year in June, NGO Samarth Bharat Vyaspeeth started a signal pattern school for street children who are into begging, selling fruits, flowers, etc., under the Teen Hath Naka flyover. The children study here as well as enjoy extra curricular activities such as drawing, yoga, music, craft, etc.
