The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) B ward (Mohhamad Ali Road, Dongri, P D'Melo Road) generates around 167 metric tonnes of garbage daily of which 2.5 metric tonnes is wet waste. Through the civic body's effort, around 24 bulk generators have been identified in the ward, but not a single unit has started waste management at source.

Udaykumar Shiroorkar, assistant commissioner of B ward said, "Bulk generators have shown space scarcity as a major problem in processing waste at the source.

We are in touch with Arvind Sawant, an MP, to make space for bulk generators, with the help of the PWD, where a bio-digester can be set up for processing waste," Shiroorkar said.

However, Shiroorkar has come up with an idea to manage waste by giving some monetary value to it. "If every item which we purchase has some monetary value even after use, residents will not throw it," said Shiroorkar.
