The Napean Sea Road Citizens' Forum (NSRCF) has filed a police complaint against the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) for allegedly dumping construction debris at the intertidal area of Nepean Sea Road near Priyadarshani Park along the Malabar Hill coastal area.

The forum also submitted their written complaint to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA).

Mukul Mehra, the secretary of NSRCF, noticed that some people were dumping construction debris at the intertidal area on the evening of December 13. The site is located near the MSRDC office. "When I personally inspected, I found that the interior and exterior walls of the MSRDC office were being demolished and some labourers were dumping the debris along the coastal area," said Mehra. Mehra said that he immediately informed the police.

The beat marshal came and took all the labourers to the police station after residents called in. The Malabar Hill Police Station lodged a complaint against Babulal Jadhav. The FIR says that construction debris from the MSRDC office was being dumped at the intertidal area.

Mehra said that dumping debris along the coastal area is a violation of the Environment Protection Act. "The Bombay High Court, as well as the Supreme Court, has prohibited illegal dumping as it causes damage to the ecology and coastline," Mehra said.

The Malabar Hill Police Station registered an FIR under section 278 of the Indian Penal Code for damage caused to the environment. "We have also made a written complaint to the MCZMA and the MPCB to bring this brazen violation of law to their attention," Mehra said. He further said that it is unfortunate that such a violation was committed by a government agency.

Shashikant Sontakke, the chief engineer of MSRDC, said they have inquired and found that the debris was not dumped from their side. "Renovation work is on at the Napean Sea Road office but, no debris from the MSRDC office site was dumped there," Sontakke said.
