Don’t be surprised if you find young students wearing caps, reflective jackets, blowing whistles and helping people cross roads at Marine Drive. These are the young traffic wardens appointed by the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP). Traffic cops are also asking citizens to turn traffic wardens for at least two hours a week as a way of community service.

“We have requested colleges to send their students for community service. Community participation is important and it would be wonderful if people at large can come in,” said Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

On January 4, the MTP along with V Citizens Action Network roped in a few students from colleges like Jai Hind, KC, HR, Wilson in south Mumbai. The traffic cops believe that if the youth is made aware of traffic rules then it would help build a culture against rash driving.

The traffic cops claim that this year the number of accidents has come down from 529 in 2016 to 390 accidents in 2017. Even the fatalities have dropped by 25 per cent this year.
