Drives down the iconic Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) might just become faster. Following several requests from citizens for the speed limit at the BWSL to be increased, the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) is carrying out a feasibility survey, and if the result is positive, there could soon be revised speed limit for the sea link.

According to sources in the MTP, the department has been receiving several demands and complaints, through various channels, from citizens and delegations seeking changes in the speed restrictions for the BWSL, especially Bandra residents, who have been pushing for a revision in the speed limit.

“While entering the sea link from Bandra at the ingress stretch, the speed limit is 50 kmph which should be revised to 70 kmph. The speed limit at the straight pathway at the sea link is 80 kmph, which citizens want upped to anywhere between 100 kmph-120 kmph. The speed limit for the egress stretch is 50 kmph, which citizens want revised to 60 kmph,” said a traffic police source.

The existing speed limits were laid down after considering the curve at the ingress stretch and other factors, the source said.

“A survey is being conducted following requests and demands from citizens. If required, we will increase the speed limit if it is in public interest,” Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, told DNA.

He added that before coming to any conclusion, safety concerns will be considered to ensure there are no accidents on the BWSL due to changes in speed restrictions. “We will also discuss it with the MSRDC and concerned agencies, and then take a call,” Kumar said.

Around a month earlier, a delegation of citizens had also approached the traffic police with a demand that two-wheelers should be allowed to ply on the JJ flyover.

“A survey was conducted and an inquiry done by a DCP rank officer of the traffic branch, and it was reasserted that it would not be proper to allow two-wheelers to ply on the JJ flyover,” said another officer.

The traffic police had banned two-wheelers on the JJ flyover in 2010 to ensure road safety after a steady increase in fatal accidents on the flyover.
