To make the process of cadaver donations simpler, the state health department, along with other stakeholders, held a meeting on Thursday under the title of Maharashtra Confederation for Organ Transplantation (MCFOT). The committee decided to have uniform norms — such as postmortems in medico-legal cases after the removal of organs — across the state.

Meanwhile, it was also discussed at this meeting that district Zonal Transplantation Co-ordination Committees (ZTCCs), apart from the Mumbai ZTCC, should be encouraged to make cadaver donations simpler.

At the MCFOT annual meeting related to cadaver donations, all the ZTCC, health department and medical education department officials present discussed the trend of cadaver donations and the kinds of problems experts face while encouraging cadaver donations.

ZTCC secretary Dr Sujata Patwardhan said: "In this meeting, we discussed various aspects related to cadaver donations and decided to implement uniform norms for the same. Also, we will make simpler rules for medico-legal cases where, if a patient's relatives are ready to donate an organ, they should get (access to) the dead body faster after the postmortem is finished."

The state ZTCC is a body that makes cadaver organs available to people on a waiting list for the same. Every patient waiting for an organ has to be registered with the ZTCC. As per the ZTCC, its main aim is to promote cadaver organ donations and transplantations. It is the body that is responsible for maintaining a registry of the people waiting for organs according to the guidelines set by the Maharashtra government. It also aims to help every person waiting for an organ by making sure that the organs are distributed fairly according to the guidelines prescribed by the government.

Patwardhan added: "Also, on March 19, senior officials from the National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation will be in the city to provide more clarity on how the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation and State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation will co-ordinate with the ZTCC."

The trend of cadaver donations has always been erratic in the city. In 2012, there were 27 donations, while in 2013, there were 24. In 2014, the city saw 41 donations that benefited 107 people. In 2015, there were 44 donations that helped 114 people. In 2016, till March, there have been 12 cadaver donations.
