If everything goes as per plan, you may not have to shell out extra on private cab companies to travel in air-conditioned comfort. The state transport department is formulating guidelines to allow AC facilities even in ordinary black and yellow cabs, which passengers can avail of by paying a separate fare.

The passengers who travels by Black and Yellow non air conditioned cab in Mumbai can heave sigh of relief. Soon they can avail facility of air conditioned on demand in it. The passengers who are spending excess money for other cool cabs would be benefitted out of it. Those passengers who are willing to travel in non air conditioned cab they can do so at normal fare.

State transport minister Diwakar Raote said, "Currently the regional transport authority (RTA) issues permits for private cab companies and cool cabs for the use of AC facilities. Though the new black and yellow cabs have provisions for air-conditioning, they are not permitted to use them, so passengers are unable benefit from it."

"I have instructed the transport department to frame guidelines to use air-conditioners in normal taxis. An expert committee including members from the taxi union will finalise the viable fare. We are contemplating all possibilities," added Raote.

Air-conditioned cabs are the need of the hour going by Mumbai's humid climate, but most people don't use the facility because they can't afford it, said the transport minister. "There would be a separate fare for those who would use air-conditioned cabs. There will be tariff card in which the fares will be mentioned. The card will be similar to that which earlier carried the day and night fare. We will issue orders to display tariff card in taxis. We will also provide toll free numbers so passengers can find out details round the clock," he added.

The minister said he had been pursuing the matter since he was an MLA. "Now I am a minister so I am pursuing the matter in larger public interest." he said.

Raja Balmiki of Unique Travel, CST, said, "Though the government's decision is a good move for common people, it will certainly create a dent in our business share. Most people want to use AC cabs for comfort, so they will hire it for the whole day."

Mahesh Zagade, transport commisioner, told dna, "There is a proposal in this regard with the state government. I may not be able comment on this subject as it is a state-level matter. When we get a clearance from the concerned authorities, we will inform you."
