Now, close to 4 lakh commuters using the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 daily may also be able to buy their tickets and monthly passes by just swiping their credit or debit cards at Metro stations. The Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL), operator of Metro has plans to introduce swiping machines for debit and credit cards in the coming few days.

According to MMOPL, it is in the process of making it available for commuters. Earlier, it had cited waiting time at queues may increase for commuters if swiping machines are introduced but now it has planned to introduce the same. MMOPL had said that their aim is to ensure that no commuter spends more than two minutes standing at the queue for buying tickets.

However, now there is a possibility that there might be a separate section or ticket counter for those willing to make payment via debit or credit cards. Several commuters in the past have expressed their wish to have a card payment option in Metro stations on social media.

The MMOPL currently offers online recharging of store value pass via debit or credit cards but now with this, swiping machines will be made available at the Metro stations. There is also a facility of mobile ticketing on Metro-1, wherein, QR code generated can be scanned for travelling. Currently, Western and Central Railways also offer swiping machines for suburban local train commuters.

When DNA sent a query to MMOPL over the introduction of swiping machines at Metro stations, it did not respond. However, in reply to commuters who had demanded such an installation at Metro stations, MMOPL has said, "As regards to availability of swipe machines at stations, we have checked the feasibility and are now in the process of making it available for our valued passengers. Please be assured that we will soon be implementing the same and expect your continued support."

Currently, close to 4 lakh passengers use the Metro corridor daily that connects Versova and Ghatkopar, made operational in June 2014.

Meanwhile, in case of the Chembur-Mahalaxmi Monorail corridor, there is no option of any cashless transactions currently and commuters are forced to buy single journey tokens. Also, the sale of monthly passes and return journey tokens is not possible in Monorail that got fully operational on Monday.
