To help farmers make accurate predictions regarding rain patterns ahead of the sowing season, the Maharashtra government has decided to install over 2,065 automated weather stations within a month.

"Of them, nearly 1,000 are expected to be installed by the end of June," said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis while inaugurating the state's first automatic weather station at Dongargaon in Nagpur.

These local stations will be able to assess the weather within a 12 sq km area. All relevant information, including the rain pattern, expected rainfall, humidity level and also the best crop to be sown, will be disseminated to each village through a digital kiosk every 10 minutes. Over 50 lakh farmers in the state will also receive information through an SMS.

"Due to the lack of an accurate forecast, farmers in the state have suffered. A lack of information about weather cycles has also forced them to sow crops thrice. These automated stations will allow them keep a tab on weather patterns," said Fadnavis.

The government has roped in Skymat services as part of the public-private partnership project.

The government is under pressure from the opposition parties to waive off farmer loans, especially since UP government's farm loan waiver will benefit most of the state's 2.15 crore farmers. The Congress, NCP and other farmers groups have been holding Sangharsha Yatras to put the pressure on the government to waive off loans in light of the rising number of farmer suicides in the state.

Fadnavis has been non-committal though and has been insisting that he is working on a long-term sustainable model for farmers to address the issue at the grassroots level.
