A strange situation has arisen with the police waiting for Sonu Nigam to lodge a complaint of extortion against Chhota Shakeel and the singer avoiding the cops.
“We had information that Sonu returned to Mumbai from abroad on Friday night. Since it was too late in the night to speak him to him, we sent our team to his house on Saturday, but we drew a blank. We approached him several times after that to request him to lodge a complaint against Shakeel. But, he is simply not available. We spoke to his secretary, who claimed that he does not know the whereabouts of his boss! We find the whole thing very fishy,’’ a senior police officer told dna on Sunday.
“How can we help him if he is not willing to even file a complaint if indeed there was an extortion bid or threat to his life? We suspect that he has settled the matter with Shakeel,” the officer added.
Sonu did not reply to an SMS sent to him by dna. His phone was also not reachable.
Sources close to Shakeel had told dna on Thursday that a person with links to the D Gang had approached Sonu over a month ago for an 18-concert tour abroad and had made an offer of 135,000 US dollars per concert. Thus an offer of 2,430,000 US dollars was agreed to be paid to him and that too entirely in advance. Apparently, the money was also paid to him. “However, Sonu backed out. This angered Shakeel majorly. It was then that bhai sent him a message a month ago. There was no threat for extortion,” a source close to the gang maintained. The source also denied that there was any effort to blackmail him by threatening to disclose his earlier close relationship with the daughter-in-law of a powerful political family. “The underworld never bothers about the private lives of people,” the source added.
However, the police are not going to close the matter. They are likely to probe if indeed any money was paid by the D company man to the singer for a concert. His call data records would also be checked with a view to getting to the bottom of the case. The police had in the past arrested diamond merchant and film producer Bharat Shah for his alleged links with Shakeel. The police had claimed that they had broken the nexus between Bollywood and the underworld. However, the complaint made by Karan Johar and Boney Kapoor had raised the spectre of the underworld again. The cops said both Johar and Kapoor had paid no extortion money to anyone from the underworld. Both had cooperated with the crime branch.
In Sonu’s case, the cops are keeping a close watch on the situation as a precautionary measure.
This case is, however, proving to be a different kettle altogether. It is learnt that Shakeel had sent an SMS to Sonu, saying that he does not “kill khargosh (rabbit)”. Now, with Shakeel assuring Sonu that he will not attack him, the police are getting the impression that “the matter has been sorted out between them”.
