Members of the Gabriel House Co-operative Housing Society in Mahim are complaining about the lack of transparency in the working of the society. The secretary and the chairman have allegedly been withdrawing money from the society's bank account. Society-member Mrs. J. Rodrigues says, "They are using the society funds without the consent of the members. Even though Margaret Crasto (former secretary) resigned in January 2014, she is still withdrawing money from the bank."

The society members have also pointed out that there has been no accountability and clarification for the same from either the secretary or the chairman. Rachel Fernandes* (another society member) says, "Angeline Rodrigues (chairperson) and Crasto have held just one meeting so far; also, the audit report for the year 2012-2013 has not been submitted. We tried complaining to the cops but they are not co-operating."

After police inaction, the society members seeked the help of Sada Sarvankar, former Shiv Sena MLA. A letter was given by Sarvankar on behalf of the society, asking the police to intervene, but no enquiry has taken place yet. Sarvankar says, "I sent the letter to Mahim Police Station last week and despite this, no action has been taken by them. Senior Inspector Dastagir Mullah has been informed about the problem and ideally, he should have started an enquiry. It looks like the police is supporting the secretary."

Other side of the story
Margaret Crasto, secretary, "All this has taken a toll on my health. I need to take medication and I am under strict observation. This society, since its inception, is spearheaded by some families, and nobody has ever questioned them. The committee is a newly-elected one, then why is there such a fuss about it? We have an accountant who can provide the balance sheet and other details regarding the funds. Every problem can be sorted out if done politely, in a peaceful and mature manner."

When we contacted Dastagir Mullah, senior police inspector of Mahim police station, he said, "What is there to discuss or know more about this issue? What are we suppose to do here?"
