Two social workers from Vikhroli area have moved a Public Interest Litigation in the Bombay High Court challenging the ‘Z’-Security cover provided to Industrialist Mukesh Amabani by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) as sanctioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The PIL filed by Nitin Deshpande and Vikrant Karnik claims that each member of military and para-military force works under an oath that he works to serve and save his nation. Compelling such members of the paramount force of our nation to provide private security to influential business class, politicians and celebrities under the cover of protection of life and property tampers the morale and reputation of the entire force.

Further it says despite the fact that there exists no real threat to life or property, the influential class in our nation and society including top politicians, sports/film celebrities and rich industrialists are now trying to avail the aforesaid categorized securities with no sufficient cause or reason but to project as a status symbol.

Around 20 CRPF commandos, headed by an Inspector-rank officer, now guard Amabani after intelligence inputs from Intelligence agencies hinted towards threat to his life. He though has to pay around Rs 15 lakhs per month for the security provided to him.

However, the PIL claims that in India there are only 125 police personnel per every 1,00,000 persons whereas the actual figure should be 230 police personnel per every 1,00,000 persons. If trained forces like CRPF, are diverted from carrying-out their primary function and are asked to provide proximate security to an individual person then the lack of special forces will have an adverse effect on the security of the public at large.

The PIL prays that the sanction order to provide security to Amabani should be quashed and set aside and till the final hearing of the petition the sanction order should be stayed. The pil will now come up for hearing in due course of time.
