Social entrepreneur Preeti Arora recently offered acid attack victim Shabbo Sheikh (21) a new job in her organisation. It came as a ray of hope for Sheikh who had lost her job in a well-known firm in Mumbai due to scars of acid attack on her face

Arora has been running an initiative to employee acid attack survivors in her organisation depending upon their qualifications. She started this initiative in December 2015 but Shabbo is the first one to join hands with her and get a job in the call center.

"Many women like Shabbo who have skills want to make their living better. Contributing few years for the acid attack victims through my artwork, I thought of doing something to empower these women. We have recently hired this 21-year-old girl to make her independent, confident and make her life easy. We hope more girls and women come forward like her to get employed and stand on their own feet," said Arora.

The Acid Survivors Foundation India (ASFI) has collated data from newspaper reports that indicates a growth in the number of cases, with 80 victims in 2010, 106 in 2011 as well as 2012, 122 in 2013 and 130 up until November of 2014. The Stop Acid Attacks campaign claims that there have been 386 cases in the period 2013 to 2014. 70 cases have been noted in the year 2015.

Shabbo who has lived in an orphanage since her childhood, was just one month old while her father threw acid on her mother, she was on her mother's lap. "My father was then sent to jail and I was in Sion Hospital for five years before going to the orphanage. My relatives never accepted me. During my first job hardly anybody spoke to me and within two months I was told to resign because many people complained about my scarred face. After joining Swot Consultancy, I have started working in a friendly environment where I get a respect as a human begin," said Shabbo.

"In order to boost their confidence and give them a normal life, government should do something for their regular income rather than only giving three lakh rupees compensation. They are declared as physically challenged. The scar on the skin does not make anybody physically challenged when they can live a normal life. We need to spread awareness about it and change our perspective," added Arora.

Arora has planned to get in touch with other organisations as well and ask them to extend a helping hand by offering a job to acid attack survivors depending upon their qualifications.

"We are requesting and urging for more applications of acid attack victims to come and work with us. I am looking for more acid attack victims to come forward. I want to empower them and decrease their stress. I will also be connecting to different organisations for more vacancies. In my organisation we have more 20 vacancies reserved for them," Preeti added.
