Sonia Kulkarni, a Wadala resident, along with two of her friends, decided to go down to the beach with a message ‘Be responsible, not anti-social’. Even though they expected the beach to be in a shoddy condition, they were still not ready for the rude shock. Kulkarni shares, “I was distraught, depressed and disgusted with the sight that I was met with. I was heartbroken when I saw the condition of my favourite God and the way he was lying—broken and orphaned.”
This bunch of friends slowly and steadily started cleaning up the beach and soon, onlookers realised that they are pretty serious. Thereafter, several others joined them in cleaning up the beach. Kulkarni adds, “We are not against any sentimental or religious values, but what is the point in adding pollutants to the sea?”
During the clean-up, they even found plastic bottles and idols with clothes, food, flowers and coconuts still on them! Kulkarni concludes, “We need more eco-friendly artificial tanks as we need to ask ourselves ‘How much more can nature take’?”
