When 40-year-old Rashmi Bhamaria got to know that she has topped in her diploma course at the university, her joy knew no bounds. Little did she know that getting to see her achievements transform into a degree would take her through a testing journey of several months, leading to her missing her convocation.

Rashmi pursued her diploma at the Bhanuben Mahendra Nanavati college of Home Science in Matunga affiliated to the SNDT Women's university in 2016-17. In July 2017, Rashmi, whose husband is a captain in the merchant navy shifted to Australia with him.

A few months later, when she got to know that she has emerged as the subject topper for her course, Rashmi started planning her visit to India to be able to attend the convocation.

After the university officials told her that the convocation would take place between December 2017 to January 2018, Rashmi came to Mumbai and waited for the official notification but in vain. Finally, the convocation took place on March 7 and Rashmi had to give it a miss as she did not get an invite or an official rank letter.

"After several inquiries and cancelled bookings, I was told that I would not get to have a convocation on stage as there were no awards for my course. My parents were also not allowed to collect the degree. I come from an orthodox household and getting this degree after so many years means a lot to me. Unfortunately, the university doesnt seem to care" she said.

Subhash Waghmare, Director, Board of Examinations and Evaluation, SNDT said, "We only call students who have special prizes and awards on stage and only such students are given rank letters. The others have to pay the requisite fees and apply for the same."

UNFULFILLED WISHES

“After several inquiries, I was told that I would not get to have a convocation on stage as there were no awards for my course. Getting this degree after so many years means a lot to me. Unfortunately, the university doesn’t seem to care” she said.
