Snag hits Harbour commuters hard

Commuters on Harbour line faced inconvenience during the morning rush hour owing to a rail fracture between Belapur and Panvel. Several trains were cancelled due to the fault on the railway track apart from services running over half an hour late.

"Morning hour is crucial for office-goers like me because if we reach even 10-15 minutes late, our half day salary gets deducted. Friday's disruption on the Harbour Line meant people reach an hour late to office," said Sushant D, a resident of Panvel.

According to a railway official, the incident was reported at 7.10 am and was rectified by 7.50 am. However, the delays and cascading effect continued till 9-10 am. In all 12 suburban services were cancelled, while those in operations were way beyond the scheduled time, that is delay of 30-45 minutes. Commuters were walking on the railway tracks only to travel by road till Belapur and Vashi to head to Thane and CST.

In the last couple of months, Central Railway has witnessed around two dozen incidents of technical faults resulting is disruption in services like over head wire breakdown, pentograph related issues, signal failure, rail fracture, derailment, etc. Due to the frequency of such incidents people have started leaving early. "Every morning it is a surprise. I have started leaving half an hour to an hour early from home to ensure I reach by workplace on time. This has certainly affected by sleep and overall health," said Amit J, a resident of Dombivali. On the other hand there was an incident of Signal Passing At Danger at Bandra on the Western Railway corridor on Friday afternoon.
