Smaller parties in the saffron alliance are getting the jitters as the partnership between the big brothers, the Shiv Sena and the BJP, teetered on the brink, and they may even be prepared to reduce their seats in the hope of saving the alliance.

Some of the leaders of these partners have so far kept a low profile, worried that a break-up could also destroy their poll prospects too. They have also been quietly urging the Sena and the BJP to resolve their differences on seat sharing sooner than later and allot the constituencies so they can launch their campaigns.

Raju Shetti of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana said on Monday, "We were willing to take a cut in our share of seats to keep the alliance going. But even after this if both the parties cannot resolve the matter it would be a big problem. It's high time they decide on the seat sharing."

Shetti said he had spoken to Mahadeo Jankar of the Rashtriya Samaj Paksha about the way ahead in case the big two part ways.

"We decided that if the Shiv Sena and BJP fight the elections alone, the smaller partners would choose to stay with one of them," Shetti told journalists.

Shetti said he would also talk to the leaders of RPI and Vinayak Mete of Shiv Sangram Party with the proposal. "This way we would be able to keep the alliance with at least one of the major parties," he said.

These four parties had fought the Lok Sabha elections together with the Shiv Sena and the BJP in what was called a Mahayuti.

Meanwhile, a BJP leader BJP leader has hinted that in case the Mahayuti falls apart, the post-poll scenario would be turbulent the possibility of big political realignments and unlikely alliances. .

Party leaders claim that internal surveys have indicated that the Modi wave in Maharashtra is intact and that if the BJP strikes out on its own it could win about 130 seats.
