The effect of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) seems to be spreading to Navi Mumbai as well.

The city Congress is demanding reduced power tariffs and is preparing itself to take on the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the state if policies are not formulated for the “benefit of public”.

The move, however, has been dubbed as a “political stunt” by its ally NCP in the satellite city.
Nerul corporator Santosh Shetty, who wrote to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, said, “The government will survive only if the people are with us. I have been fighting against exorbitant power tariffs for four months now. I have ensured that MSEDCL corrects the bills of the residents. Even if the party suspends me for this stand, I am ready for it.”

Shetty refused to be compared with Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam, who made a similar demand a few days back.

“I have been fighting against high power tariffs since the last four months when neither Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was nor Nirupam’s demand were in the picture,” said Shetty.

Navi Mumbai district Congress committee president, Dashrath Bhagat, too, echoed Shetty’s sentiments, but differed on the point of suspension saying, “It is his opinion and not of the city Congress.”

Bhagat added, “It is our stand that electricity tariff should be slashed. Finally, we are working for the people and they should be benefitted. Without the support of the people, we cannot grow as a party in Navi Mumbai. We have already brought the matter to the notice of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Manikrao Thakre. We will be meeting the chief minister and superintendent engineer of MSEDCL to sort out the matter of high power tariff once and for all.”

Meanwhile, Congress’ alliance partner, NCP, has termed the demand a “political stunt to gain mileage”.

NCP corporator Vaibhav Gaikwad said, “Why is it that Congress leaders from city approach chief minister for every small thing? They have approached chief minister over garbage clearance and the people are seeing its effects. They should have written a letter to the power minister. It is difficult to understand what is the political strategy of the Congress.”
