As per the perspective plan recently released by the University of Mumbai, six new colleges in south Mumbai will be given the approval to start in the upcoming academic year under the University of Mumbai. The plan has provisions for a law college, a BEd college, an undergraduate night college, a college for women and one for music in the city for the next academic year.

Of the total 11 colleges that will open in Mumbai, six will be in Mumbai city while the other five will be in the suburbs. The perspective plan was recently approved by the university's senate and is now with the expert committee formed by the government under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. As per the norms, the university invited proposals from educational institutes for starting new colleges in the academic year 2018-19 on September 21.

"The new colleges will have specialised courses which will help students to get jobs in the employment market rather than just imparting theoretical knowledge," said an official from the university.

As per the new norms set by the state government, all colleges that submit their proposals along with a letter of Intent (LOI) will be allowed to formally begin from the next academic year after setting up the necessary infrastructure to start the college and recruiting faculty for the courses.

Currently, the University of Mumbai has over 750 affiliated colleges under its ambit. As per the plan, a total of 46 new colleges will be added to this list by the next academic year. The last date for colleges to send their proposals to the university is September 29.
