Six dead after a four-storey Bandra building collapse

According to the residents the building collapsed at 1.30 pm in the afternoon, due to weak basement. Few more residents are feared trapped under the debris.

Thursday afternoon was a sad day for the residents of Behrampada slum in Bandra East as six persons died while five others were injured after a ground plus four-storey building collapsed.

According to the residents the building collapsed at 1.30 pm in the afternoon, due to weak basement. Few more residents are feared trapped under the debris.

Nisar Khan, lost five of his eight children in the incident.The injured residents were rushed to the Bhabha Hospital, Bandra and are identified as Abdul Salam Shaikh (34), Doulat Shaikh (50), Zulfekar Nisar Khan (18), Sakhiya Nisar Khan (40), Islam Iqbal Shaikh (17). While, the six deceased have been identified as Ayesha Akbar Khan (12), Ali Nisar Ahmad Khan (3.5), Osama Nisar Khan (14), Afifa Sadab Nisar Khan (1), Aribi Sadas Nisar Khan (2) and Rusuda Nisar Ahmad Khan (16).

While, the fire brigade reached there on time, due to narrow bylane, the fire engines and other vehicles were not able to reach around the building area. Speaking about the incident, Chief Fire Officer (CFO) PS Rahangdale, said: "Due to less passage area, we had to carry out the rescue operation manually using small gears rather than taking help of vehicles. We will be continuing the operation till the time we are assured that nobody is trapped inside. It is level two incident."

Due to one building collapse, parts of other two joined building also collapsed. According to the fire department officials the building residents were evacuated before it fell down.

The other residents staying in the area helped the authorities to clear out the debris and search trapped people. Nadeem Khan, a resident said, "After the incident, many residents came up to clear the debris from the premises. Due to narrow spaces, the vehicles to clear the debris couldn't be used because of which the youngsters came forward to clear the debris and collect it outside."

"Out of the four families living in the building, two left earlier. While, few members went out for work," said Zakir Shaikh.

Five fire tenders and five ambulances reached the site. An NDRF team of 12 members also reached at around 2.30 pm for help. L B Thapar, team commander, said: "We will be continuing the rescue operation till all the debris is cleared. We fear that there might be few more trapped inside."
