In the wake of the landslide in Pune's Malin district, which destroyed an entire village and killed hundreds, municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte called for a special meeting of agencies concerned on Tuesday.

Who was present and what was discussed?
Representatives of Geological Survey of India (GSI), Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada), Mumbai Police, Slum Rehabilitation Authority and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, and the collector were present to discuss the lack of clarity on which authority is responsible for ensuring protection of slums across landslide-prone spots in the city.

How many such spots are there and where?
Currently, there are 321 landslide-prone spots in the city, of which 94 are located on the collector's land, six on Mhada land, 31 on BMC land, 188 on private land and two on forest land. N ward has 43 such spots on the collector's land, P-north has 14 on private land, and S ward has 150 on private land.

What needs to be done?
Kunte said 1,200 retaining walls will have to be built, including those that require repair. "Previously, Mhada and PWD of the state government used to carry out the construction of retaining walls, we will request the state housing department to let the slum improvement board to carry out the work. We will also request the state to provide funds for this," he said.

What are Kunte's other plans?
The civic chief said a study and monitoring of the different spots will be carried out by the GSI authorities. A few years ago, Mhada had done a study on 61 such spots with the help of IIT-B, however, only some of them were completed, he added.

BMC chief on rehabilitation
On the rehabilitation of residents of thousands of slums located at the landslide-prone spots, Kunte said in case of any emergency, BMC can give temporary accommodation to such residents, but providing them with permanent accommodation is not in their hands.
