Ten days after the body of a 32-year-old man, his head smashed, was found at the Sion Fort, the Sion police solved the murder mystery on Saturday with the arrest a friend of the victim. Cops attributed the crime to a dispute over Rs10,000 and an alleged love affair.

What was cops' strategy?
The customary strategy of putting up handbills to ascertain the identity of a deceased led the police to the alleged killer. A source said after they were informed about the battered body of the victim, later identified as Sonu Vishwakarma, on November 4, they arranged to display posters of the dead man around Sion.

The efforts bore fruit when Vishwakarma’s father approached the police, saying the photo on the poster was of his son. “We then learned that Vishwakarma was working as a home guard for last six years,” said Inspector Dattaram Girap from Sion Police station.

What made them suspect the victim's friend?
Girap said once the body was identified, they channelled their energies to track down Sonu’s friend Deepak Kori, who had emerged as the main suspect during investigation. The cops nabbed Kori from Chembur on Saturday.
Kori told the police that he had lent Rs 10,000 to Vishwakarma about four months ago. Every time Kori would ask Vishwakarma to return the money, the latter would promise to do so next month.
“Vishwakarma kept on making false promises to Kori. On the day of the crime, Kori took Vishwakarma to the Sion Fort where both of them consumed alcohol. When Vishwakarma went off to sleep, Kori smashed his head with a stone and fled from the spot,” said Girap.

Informer spotted killer and victim together
The policeman said, “Our informers told us that they had spotted the suspect and the deceased together on the day of murder. With some technical help, we ascertained that both were together the entire day. Based on the information, we arrested Kori.”

Killer was involved with victim's sister
Cops also said that Kori was in a relationship with the victim’s sister. However, Vishwakarma never approved of the liaison. “He had even warned Kori against seeing her,” said a source. They are probing if this was another trigger for the crime.
