Sikhs to gear up for 350th Prakash Purab with colourful procession

As part of the celebrations leading up to the 350th Prakash Purab (birth anniversary) of Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru, over 10,000 devotees from 14 gurudwaras are expected to participate in a grand procession in the western suburbs of the city on Sunday. Starting at Gurudwara Seven Bungalows in Andheri, the procession will end at Gurudwara Dhan Pothohar in Santacruz in the evening, followed by discourses, devotional chanting and langar at the gurudwara.

With six chariots leading the way, the procession will be held along a 12-kilometre stretch. Devotees will use cars and motorbikes, tempos, jeeps and bicycles till Hotel Ramada in Juhu, after which they will park their cars at the Shiv Sagar parking lot in Juhu. They will then walk all the way to Santacruz. People participating in the procession will chant devotional songs.

Speaking about the event, Mohan Singh Saini, spokesperson for Punjabi Cultural Heritage Board, Mumbai said, "The event is being organised to commemorate the 350th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Sing on January 5, 2017. He was born in 1666 and we are celebrating his life. The year-long celebrations have been going on globally, with people coming together for the celebrations."

Meanwhile, another procession will be held from Kalina to Khar. Manmohan Singh, general secretary of Guru Singh Sabha at Dadar, said, "We have organised processions from Kalina to Khar to make people aware about the teachings given by Guru Gobind Singh. Through this, we are spreading awareness about service to humanity, freedom and practice of religion. Since it is his 350th birth anniversary, we have organised 350 blood donation camps all over India. Other events like health camps and social upliftment programmes are also held to mark the celebrations."
