After seven days of IAS officer DK Ravi’s death, the Karnataka State Government on Monday decided to handover the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision in the State Assembly as soon as the House assembled at 11.15 am. Earlier, the State Cabinet met at 10.30 am to discuss the issue of handing over the death probe to the CBI.

Making the announcement in the Assembly, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the government did not want to handover the case to the CBI since there are efficient police officers in the state capable of conducting the inquiry in a fair and transparent manner. “We did not want to handover the case to the CBI since such decision would affect the morale of honest and efficient police officers in the state,” the Chief Minister said.

Coming down heavily on the Opposition parties for politicising the death of DK Ravi, the Chief Minister said that Congress was never indulged in politicising the death issues. “What is paining me is that some political leaders bringing Ravi’s parents to the Vidhana Soudha premises and making them to sit on a dharna demanding for the CBI probe. Some politicians want to gain political mileage out of this issue. They have to be ashamed of themselves for stooping such a low level,’’ the Chief Minister said.

He said that he wanted to table the status report of on the death of IAS Officer Ravi but could not since the High Court had restricted making interim report public.

It may be recalled; the Karnataka High Court on Sunday stayed the tabling of interim report on the death of IAS Officer Ravi. The move came after a petition filed by Sudhir Reddy, the husband of a woman IAS officer, a batch-mate of Ravi, allegedly the last person who made a phone call.

The Chief Minister said Hanumantharayappa, father-in-law of DK Ravi, had filed a complaint (No. 47/2015) at Madiwala Police Station on March 16 at 7.45 pm.  “Hanumantharayappa, in his complaint, said that Ravi left his office at 11.30 am on March 16 and went to his flat at St. John’s Apartments. When Ravi’s wife Kusuma opened the door in the evening he was found dead hanging to the ceiling fan,’’ the Chief Minister said.

He said the CID police had promptly begun the inquiry into Ravi’s death but some political parties have ruined the peace in the state by politicising the issue. “It is they (Opposition parties) who had criticised the CBI when they were in power. They described the CBI as a Congress agency. Now, the same people are demanding for the CBI probe. They should be ashamed for their double standards,’’ he said.
