On Monday, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) sealed six hookah bars and lounges and demolished 10 illegal restaurants and their constructions after they failed to meet fire safety norms and licenses. This was done after giving an extension of 15 days to the city's hotels, restaurants and hookah parlours to obtain the NOC from the TMC's fire department.

While prompt action was taken against the handful of parlours and some bars for operating without the requisite fire NOC, there are over 550 hotels, lounges, bars and hookah parlours in the city.

The citizen's forum of India has lauded TMC's effort. "We welcome the action taken by the TMC against restaurants and hotels operating without valid licenses and fire safety approvals," said Dayanand Nene, president of the forum. However, he also stated that the TMC, under political pressure, had not taken any action against United 21 which is owned by a Thane MLA Pratap Sarnaik.

Sanjeev Jaiswal, TMC commissioner, said that no one will be spared. "We have just started the drive from January 22 and it is not possible to seal all the hotels and parlours in one day. Those who do not have fire NOC will be sealed."
