Should there be a prescribed fee for admission forms?

The ongoing admission process seems to be burning holes in the pockets of parents, seeing as they have to buy forms for as high as Rs2,000. While some schools are charging high rates for said forms, authorities at other schools feel that parents shouldn't be charged exorbitant amounts as there is no guarantee of admission being granted to their ward.

The period where parents are seen running across the city from one school to another, seeking admission for their toddlers, has started. Parents end up paying anything ranging from Rs150 and Rs2,000 for the admissions forms.

Ranjini Krishnaswamy, principal, Billabong High International School, Thane said: "Our admission process takes place in three phases. Once in January, then March and finally, in May. This is so that families who transfer from another place can seek admission for their children. The admission form price is decided by our franchise head and not us. So we are not at liberty to say why the cost differs in each school."

While some city school authorities blame the management for the high charges of forms, others claim that it is not the admission form which is charged, but the brochure in which the information of the school is provided.

Kavita Aggarwal, principal, DG Khetan and chairperson of Mumbai International School Association said: "The form fees depend all on the management of all international schools. We don't charge for the admission form, but the booklet that has all school-related information is charged for just Rs150."

Echoing the sentiments of Aggarwal, Vandana Lulla, director, Podar group of international schools said: "We don't charge a single penny for the admission form, because it is available on our school website for free. We don't know which parent's ward will be granted admission, so it is not fair to charge them for the applications."
