A speeding heavy vehicle allegedly rammed into a senior citizen, identified as Vijay Gargude (60), on Sunday noon. Gargude was declared dead on arrival after he was rushed to the hospital. Gargude, along with his uncle was heading to Ramabai Nagar area.
A case of rash driving has been registered at the Pant Nagar police station by complainant Sakharam Gargude (69), who is said to be the uncle of the deceased. According to the police, Sakharam and Vijay are residents of Kamboli, Raigad district.
Near the crossing of the Eastern Express Highway, Vijay was crossing the road directly by the divider in the middle of the lane instead of using the underground subway.
While crossing, a loaded truck — number (AP 12 TB1888) — rushed towards Vijay near the divider and rammed on to him. Vijay sustained severe injuries on the head and was rushed towards a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.
"We have registered a case against the driver and have also seized the truck. As of now we do not find any possibility of drink and drive but we are carrying necessary investigation. The accused driver was rushing carelessly towards Thane side from Mumbai. He has been booked under section 279 ( Rash driving) and section 304 (a)(causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code," said Rohini Kale, senior police inspector of Pant Nagar police station.
